Does Medicaid Cover Dental Care for Adults and Children?

Medicaid is an excellent program from U.S. government that provides health care for those who are in need. However, does Medicaid cover dental treatment? This is a very interesting question that has been asked by our readers for a while now. We will try our best to give a brief yet complete explanation about the relation between Medicaid and dental treatment.

The Medicaid is basically a federal program administered by special agencies in the State government. Since this is a federal program, it means that there are certain rules applied to the program, specifically about coverage benefits and limitation of Medicaid.

Does Medicaid Cover Dental Treatments?

During the first few years of its establishment, the Federal government set the Medicaid to cover dental treatments too, aside the obvious health treatments. However, a few years ago the Federal government makes the dental benefit an optional benefit, meaning that the obligation to include dental benefit on Medicaid program is revoked, allowing state governments to remove the dental benefit if they want to.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Medicaid program still covers the cost of dental care for children up to 18 years of age. It is important to remember that we’re talking about the Medicaid adult enrollees.

With this change of policy, it is hard to pinpoint which state cover dental in their Medicaid program. There are also some differences in the dental benefit received by the Medicaid members on each of the state.  Some states cover the cost of medically-necessary major dental treatments; others cover the basic and preventive dental care, while there are still some states that don’t cover dental benefits at all.

Hence, your best option would be contacting your state’s Medicaid office or the responsible agencies that administer the health care in your state and ask them directly about this. However, we still think that people should be able to find the information they need in just one page, so please allow us to make a summary about which state Medicaid cover dental treatments.
