Single mothers often face challenges that no man can understand. Many of them are on a tight budget, and this makes dental insurance as something they can’t afford. What’s more, the dental care in United States is expensive, and even if they had the dental insurance, they don’t cover the whole cost for major services.

We understand that a lot of single mothers out there who have dental problems, and usually they would think that they are going to get their dental care done after getting some money. But in most cases, the money in is immediately spent for the children. Therefore, a lot of mothers are looking for free financial aid or dental grants for single moms.

Before we continue our post, we would like to remind you that most of the grants for single mothers out there (especially the government grants) prefer single mothers who are currently pursuing their college degree. Therefore, if you are a college student, then you are lucky because there are more grants option for you.

We’re not saying that the grants are available solely for single mothers who are pursuing their college degree, there are several other grants available for common single mothers too. There are also other ways to get cheap or free dental care for single mothers. We’re going to share the tips with you shortly.

Although there are no specific dental grant program available for single moms, but these women can apply for the common federal grants that can be used for their dental care purposes. Most of the federal grants for single mothers are given to those who are willing to continue their education. You can apply for Pell Grant from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process. Usually they treats single mothers with low income as their priority. The Pell Grant is the door for other government grants. If you get the Pell Grant, you can try the FSEOG Grant (Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) that is specifically given to single mothers with the absolute level of financial needs

For those who are not attending college, you may try the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families a.k.a. TANF. This grant is given for families or single mothers who are struggling financially. Single mothers with children whose age is less than 19 are eligible for this grant. The grant for single mothers will give you some cash amount for no more than 60 months. You are only allowed to apply for the grant program once in a lifetime.

Other common grants that may be useful for single mothers’ dental care are:

  • Children’s Health Insurance Program
  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
  • Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
  • Section 8 Housing Program
  • National School Lunch Program (NSLP)

Although those are not exactly dental grants, you can save some bucks by cutting your expenses. Hopefully you can use the saved money to take care of your dental problems.

How to Get Cheap or Free Dental Care for Single Mothers

If you failed in getting single mothers dental grants, here are some things you can do to find cheap or free dental care in your area:

  1. Start searching financial aid from 211. Call them or visit their official site at
  2. Call the hospitals in your area and ask whether they have financial assistance program for single mothers with low income.
  3. Try to go to dental school clinics to get discounted dental care. Although they may need extra time to get your dental care done, they are cheaper.
  4. You can always look for medical research clinics in your city. Although it is uncommon, some of the clinics may provide dental research. You can always register as a tester. Heck, you can even get some money by doing so.

Being a single mother is a HUGE responsibility. We personally think that single mother is one of the hardest jobs on earth. You have to educate your children and make sure they are healthy. You have to endure it all by yourself, and you have to become the mother and father for them. We honestly hope this post about dental grants for single moms can help.

    I have periodontal real bad am 40 years of age with 3 kids that i would love to be around for.. the states inc. Wont pay for what i need.. can you please help me… my teeth are so messed up… they are lose and breaking…

      I am very sorry to hear that, Amy. Have you tried all of our recommendation for dental grants for single moms above? There are several other alternatives that you might want to consider, including:

      1. Getting help from families and local communities (such as churches, etc), they may be able to help a bit
      2. You can ‘exchange’ your service with the dentist. For example, someone who is working as a plumber might negotiate with the dentist to offer their service in exchange for lower fees. It all depends on your negotiation skills.
      3. This is pretty radical, but going abroad to get your teeth’s done is actually much more affordable than having the procedure in the States. Countries like India, Mexico, Indonesia, etc are known for their low medical cost.

      Up until today we cannot find any specific dental grants made available for individuals, including single mothers. I wish you and your children the best of luck..
